Adding facebook customer chat to a wordpress website is easier when using the plugin method, but you can also configure the facebook chat using the html code method as well; using the code facebook provides you just need to place it on the body section of your website.

Adding the facebook messenger chat on your website provides your visitors an instant way to engage with your facebook page, from your website without leaving the page they are viewing; the widget remains present from any page you are on the website.

I like the option to customize the greeting message on the facebook messenger widget, as well as the color option to help brand it to meet your website design too; and you able to even customize the code further with a special message when someone is logged in to facebook verses when someone is not.

Marketing your Website offers so many options, I find that having a live chat like the facebook messenger is very effective in the effort to keep visitors engaged; other marketing methods like an opt-in form on your website works too but maybe the visitors has a question and so using the facebook customer chat is a great choice.

Using the facebook chat wordpress plugin instead of the code method is OK if you do not have many plugins installed, I do not personally recommend that option though to help reduce the number of plugins you are installing on your wordpress website; so using the code method is best in my opinion because this method pulls from facebook server rather than from your website host.
